Restoration Gardens Groundbreaking Ceremony
December 8, 2009

On December 8, 2009, the partnership of Empire Homes of Maryland, Inc. (EHM) and Homes For America along with AIRS and EHM’s Board of Directors, the Baltimore Workforce Investment Board Youth Council and honored guests celebrated the groundbreaking of Restoration Gardens, Maryland’s first supportive permanent housing facility for homeless and unstably housed youth ages 18-24.

Restoration Gardens will provide 43 units of permanent housing with supportive services for homeless and unstably housed youth. The project is the culmination of years of collaborative work by the Baltimore Homeless Youth Initiative, a coalition of more than 15 organizations and governmental agencies formed in 2002 to develop a continuum of housing and services for homeless youth. The first of its kind in the state of Maryland, Restoration Gardens will be located at the former Springhill Elementary School in the southern Park Heights Community. EHM and Homes for America purchased the school from the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta who obtained it at tax sale. The original school building will be renovated, a 1960’s addition built later will be demolished and a new addition will be added. Forty of the units will be efficiencies with full kitchens and baths; the other 3 units will be one bedroom. The building will also house a large community/recreation room; a library and computer room; offices for management, service providers/counselors; and a resident manager’s unit. AIRS and other members of the Baltimore Homeless Youth Initiative will refer residents and provide supportive services.
